Poverty in Africa

After many decades of independence, African nations are still plagued by poverty. Billions of dollars worth of aid has been provided by donor agencies; successive governments in Africa have vowed to fight poverty, diseases and improve health and education. With very few exceptions, there seem to be no headway. What is going on with African leadership? Is it misappropriation of funds brought about by greed, lack of managerial skills and foresight? Is it that Africa is destined to remain in savagery for life? Is it a product of white imperialism or a combination of a number of things? What is happening, mother Africa? A visit to the slums of Ajegunle in Lagos or the Ghettos of Soweto reveals the same plight: despair and hopelessness. We the people of Africa need to call on divine intervention and peaceful demonstration of our frustrations. Africa countries and the so-called AU lack real leadership. We need God more than ever because the situation appears to have no end in sight. Your comments will be valued greatly.

I know nothing about what is needed to make a country rich or poor. I have noticed though that richer countries are those which seem to be more self sufficient. One thing that seems to hurt my country are imports. The products are puchased in preference to local ones, causing a loss to local maufacturers and they have heavy taxes which hurt the consumers.

I suppose one way that rich countries can help poorer countries a little richer is by helping them to provide for themselves. For instance, instead of donating pounds of food, they may try donating pounds of seeds, and sending people to educate farmers on the best ways to grow their crops on their very small incomes, so at least they can povide themselves with food. Plantations can also provide a nation with food as well as employment.

It's how I would try to help the situation, but like I said before, I really don't know what it takes to make a country rich or poor.
